  Rights Protection and Entrepreneurship Development

The Financial Literacy for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and the ArtLaw Projects, are being undertaken with the support of the Ford Foundation over an 18-month period commencing from September 2006. The overall project objective is to promote rights protection and awareness of legal entitlements as an integral element of advancing entrepreneurship development, employment and income creation in Nigeria. The focus on MSMEs reflects important policy and institutional changes resulting from the introduction of the first-ever national microfinance policy in December 2005. MSMEs will need to improve their capacities to benefit from the opportunities presented by the emergence of the new microfinance banks (MFBs). DIN's work in this sector therefore aims to improve access by MSMEs to practical information about the operations and services of MFBs.

With the ArtLaw Project, the aim is to develop information and resource materials that will help to improve understanding and knowledge among artists and other stakeholders in the arts sector about important regulatory provisions and legal entitlements. This is being done against the background that the intersection of law and the arts is an area that has yet to receive adequate attention although there is a growing recognition of the potential contributions of the arts sector to the national economy.
