Professor J.O. Irukwu SAN,

Professor Joseph Ogbonnaya Irukwu is a lawyer, educationist, author and chartered insurer. He was called to the English Bar in 1962 and enrolled as a Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in the same year. He has held many top positions in both the private and public sectors of the Nigerian economy. He is the Executive Chairman of African Development Insurance Company Limited; Chairman, Cargo Defence Fund of the Nigerian Shippers' Council; President, African Insurance Law Association; Professor of Insurance Studies at the College of Insurance and Risk Management of the West African Insurance Institute and Chairman of the Board of that Institute; Adjunct Professor of Insurance and Insurance Law in the Faculty of Management Science, Enugu State University of Science and Technology; President of the Nigerian Insurance Law Association and National President of the Faculty of Risk Management. He is a recipient of the 1993 and 1998 State Merit Awards of the Government of Abia State for outstanding meritorious service to the State and the nation. In July 1994, he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) of the Abia State University in recognition of what the University Orator described as his unparalleled contributions to the Nigerian and African financial sectors and his distinguished career in the public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy. In December 1998, he was conferred with the National Productivity Order of Merit. For his outstanding contributions to the development of the Nigerian legal system, especially in the areas of insurance law, he was elevated to the status of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) at the Supreme Court, Abuja on September 8, 2003.
