Enterprise Promotion for Women's Advancement (EMPOWA)

The Enterprise Promotion for Women’s Advancement (EMPOWA) is being undertaken in Nigeria by Development Initiatives Network (DIN) with the support of the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), which is based in Accra, Ghana. The Project finds its justification and rationale in the information and knowledge gaps that exist particularly between women involved in micro and small enterprises and the financial services sector in Nigeria. As a result, these women who in many cases have to juggle family responsibilities with entrepreneurial activities, fail to maximize their economic and financial potentials. In the current phase, which commenced on 1 October 2007, the Project aims to provide financial literacy education to women in the two focal States of Osun (South West Zone) and Kwara (North Central Zone) and build linkages between the target groups, for example, small-scale agricultural producers, market traders and artisans, and the microfinance sector. It is expected that in this way, the EMPOWA Project will accelerate the realization of personal, family and business goals. So far 218 women have participated in the EMPOWA trainings.
